Kanakaris Winery
The viticultural zone of "Plagia Aigialeias" is a charismatic place, ideal for cultivating vines and producing grapes of exceptional quality, the raw material for unique, distinctive, and exceptional wines. All this is not by chance, as a series of factors and characteristics determine the viticultural zone, leading many reputable and important figures in the world of wine to characterize it as one of the best and most significant viticultural zones not only in Greece but also in the world.
Just like in the entire Greek territory, viticulture in Aigialeia dates back to prehistoric times.
Apart from ancient written testimonies (e.g., Pausanias) and natural monuments in the area connected with vine cultivation (e.g. the vineyard of Pausanias), the greatest and most reliable evidence of the region's longstanding involvement with vineyards and winemaking lies in its indigenous grape varieties. Some of these have disappeared, while others still exist and are even unique to the wider area.
Let's delve into this more analytically, focusing, of course, on those varieties we trust for crafting the wines.
Varieties
Roditis
Enthralled beautifully in high altitudes and sandy soils, it enjoys ideal conditions for a long vegetative period and slow ripening, resulting in grapes with exceptional aromatic and flavor concentration and high, refreshing acidity with an excellent acid balance.
Malagouzia
The Malagouzia grape borrows elements from its Southern variant (green and herbaceous character), but its adaptation to the terroir of Mountainous Aigialeia gives it an exotic character, rich aroma of citrus fruits on the familiar backdrop of the minerality of Plagia Aigialeia.
Mavro Kalavritino
This variety exhibits very distinct oenological characteristics that make it unique. It has a particularly distinctive aroma of summer red fruits but also a spicy, earthy character. With not much color and tannins in the skin, it is ideal for producing modern, fresh red wines as well as exceptional rosé wines with a sensory aroma and a lovely light pink color.
Merlot
Over time, it has perfectly acclimatized to the microclimate and terroir of the region, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality, also due to being the earliest red variety in the Plagia Aigialeia area. Depending on the altitude it is planted at, it yields red wines ranging from medium to deep red, with tannins that easily become velvety.
Syrah
Ideal vineyards are those at altitudes ranging from 500 to 750 meters, where Syrah truly gives grapes with very dark color, good tannins, rich aroma, and sufficient concentration. In the more mountainous vineyards, it faces challenges of ripening due to cooler harvests. However, the wines from these vineyards have unique personality and varietal expression.Grapes from these vineyards are ideal for creating rosé wines with particular complexity and finesse.
